About the fund
Help from the Local Discretionary Social Fund is in the form of vouchers for supermarkets, travel or furniture. When we can, we will provide furniture vouchers for charities or suppliers who stock recycled goods, rather than new items.
The Local Discretionary Social Fund doesn't provide cash awards.
Who can apply
You need to live in Brighton & Hove and be eligible for a benefit or tax credit.
Making a claim
Emergency help requests are usually assessed within one working day of receiving all the information we need. Help with essential items requests are usually assessed within five working days of receiving all the information we need.
We will look at the situation of you and your household and try to find the most effective way of helping you. This may include referring you to an advice agency for budgeting or debt advice or suggesting other agencies who may be able to help.
Collecting your awards or items
You will need to collect your award in person from Bartholomew House unless you have mobility problems.
We have agreements with many supermarkets, charities and second hand shops across the city where you can collect your items. We will give you a list of these with your award letter.
For larger items, such as fridges, cookers and washing machines you will be able to arrange delivery and installation with the supplier.
