COVID-19 service update: Following the introduction of new measures outlined by the UK Government on 16 March in response to the coronavirus pandemic, Brighton & Hove registration service has suspended assistance with the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS).

This suspension will allow the team to prioritise other work as suggested by the General Register Office.

We will let people know as soon as we can confirm when the EUSS document checking service will be running again.

If you’re an EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland citizen, you and your family can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK.

The deadline for applying is 30 June 2021, or 31 December 2020 if the UK leaves the EU without a deal. 

Verify your identity for the EU Settlement Scheme

The first part of the EU Settlement Scheme application asks you to verify your identity using your European identity document, such as your passport or ID card. You can do this by either:

  • scanning your document into the ‘EU Exit: ID Document Check’ app for Android phones
  • sending your document in the post and uploading your photo using the online application on GOV.UK

If you don’t have an Android phone and don’t want to send your documents in the post, you can use our free drop-in ID document check service at Brighton Town Hall to have your identity documents checked.

You cannot use the ID verification service if you have already started your online application. If you've already started, you'll need to send your documents to the Home Office.

This service is free and available on:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 9.30am to 12 noon
  • Wednesday: 10am to 12 noon

What you need to bring

You must bring one of the following identity documents:

  • biometric passport or ID card from an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland
  • UK-issued biometric residence card

Your passport or ID card must show the ePassport symbol to be read by the app. If you do not have a biometric identity card, you’ll need to send your documents to the Home Office by post.

You must also:

  • bring a mobile phone that can receive SMS text messages
  • have a valid email address because you’ll be sent an email with instructions on how to complete your application after your documents have been checked

After your documents have been checked

After your identity documents have been checked, you will be able to complete the second part of the application on any computer or device with an internet connection.
