You need a permit to install or adapt gaming machines or gambling software on your premises.
Gaming machine stakes and fees
Under the Gambling Act 2005, all gaming machines fall under the Council’s control. They fall into categories depending on limits on the stake laid down and prizes available. These are set out in the table below:
Machine category | Maximum stake | Maximum prize |
A | Unlimited | Unlimited |
B1 | £2 | £4,000 |
B2 | £100 in multiples of £10 | £500 |
B3 | £1 | £500 |
B3A | £1 | £500 |
B4 | £1 | £250 |
C | 50p | £35 |
D | 10p to 30p* | £5 to £8** |
* Category D machines with a 10p stake are entitled to offer prizes of up to £5 in cash, or up to £5 in cash and £3 in non-monetary prizes.
** Category D machines with a 30p stake can offer £8 in non-monetary prizes only.
Adult gaming centres, family entertainment centres (licensed and unlicensed), casino, betting, and bingo operators are entitled to offer a set number of gaming machines of certain categories, depending on their premises.
Games of skill such as quiz machines and amusement only machines such as ‘space invaders’ do not require a permit under the new act.
