What the Healthy Choice scheme is

These pages have details of cafes, restaurants and takeaways signed up to our Healthy Choice scheme. These businesses are committed to preparing, cooking and serving meals in a healthier way.

Businesses make Healthy Choice Commitments. Those that make a range of commitments receive a Healthy Choice Award.

Once a business has signed up they can display the Healthy Choice logo in their business.

Outlets must have a food hygiene rating score of 3 or above to take part.

64 Degrees

Adopted a sugary drinks levy supporting the Children's Health Fund. Prepares meals from scratch using fresh ingredients. 64 Degrees registered its Healthy Choice commitments in October 2015.

Artisan

Offers coffee, sandwiches, homemade soups and cakes. Offers healthier options. Artisan registered its Healthy Choice commitments in May 2016.

Arts Piazza, University of Sussex

Offers coffee, a range of homemade cakes, bakes and other treats. Offers healthier choices. Arts Piazza received its Healthy Choice award in July 2016.

As You Like It

Offers healthier toppings for jacket potatoes, free tap water and Sugar Smart information. As You Like It registered Healthy Choice commitments in August 2018 and March 2019.

Baked

Offers healthy lunch options and uses healthier cooking methods. Offers vegan, gluten-free, no-added sugar options. Baked registered its Healthy Choice commitments in August 2017.

BaxterStorey Catering, Bupa staff canteen

Offers staff a range of options including a low calorie range. Offers healthier snacks like whole fruit and low salt and sugar products. BaxterStorey Catering received its Healthy Choice award in October 2015.

Belchers Cafe

Adopted a Sugar Smart policy which includes low-sugar condiments and sugar-free drinks for children. It doesn’t promote high sugar snacks at the point of sale. Belchers Cafe renewed its Healthy Choice commitments in July 2016.

Bellerby and Embassy College cafeteria

Promotes healthy eating to students. Offers a range of home-cooked dishes and salads. It displays its healthier snacks and drinks prominently. The cafeteria received its Healthy Choice award in October 2015.

The Bevy

Offers a Saturday morning breakfast menu with the traditional full english as well as healthier alternatives. It serves fresh fruit salads, low sugar granola and fresh pressed vegetable-based juices. The Bevy received its Healthy Choice award in April 2016.

The Big Bowl

Makes dishes with fresh ingredients and healthier cooking methods like steaming and baking. The Big Bowl received its Healthy Choice award in October 2015.

Black Radish

Grocery and café selling locally sourced and organic seasonal products. Offers a ‘help yourself’ salad bar, sourdough open sandwiches, homemade soups and freshly pressed raw juices. The owners are conscious about waste reduction and sustainability. Black Radish received its Healthy Choice award in October 2017.

Legal and General offers free breakfast to its staff. They recognise the importance of a nutritious start to the day. Their staff canteen offers balanced meals and a variety of lower sugar snack options. Chand Co Group received its Healthy Choice award in October 2019.

A café in The Circle studios which provides a variety of healthy breakfast and lunch options. The Circle Café received its Healthy Choice award in January 2018.

Makes fresh paella with high quality ingredients. Displays sugar content information so customers can make informed drink choices. Crocus Paella received its Healthy Choice award in July 2016.

The Dhaba, University of Sussex

Offers a range of vegetarian and vegan options, including healthier choices. The Dhaba received its Healthy Choice award in July 2016.

Fine Eat

This café on Western Road cooks traditional breakfasts and lunches in a healthier way. It uses high quality ingredients, swapped to better oil and sourced healthier drink alternatives. Fine Eat received its Healthy Choice award in May 2018.

The Flip Side of Food

Minimises the sugar and salt content of meals and provides balanced dishes. The Flip Side of Food received its Healthy Choice award in February 2016.

The French Revolution

Attended a Healthy Choice training workshop in June 2016.

The Garden Cafe

Situated in St. Ann Well’s Garden, the café offers freshly prepared homemade meals. They do not add seasonings to children’s dishes and freshly prepare them onsite. The Garden Café received its Healthy Choice award in October 2019.

The Good Food Shop

Offers salad boxes, sandwiches, freshly baked baps and jacket potatoes. It sources ingredients locally and freshly prepares food onsite. The shop is Sugar Smart. The Good Food Shop received its Healthy Choice award in August 2017.

Hamilton Lodge School

Cooks traditional dishes in a healthier way. Cooks meals from scratch and customers can easily get to the salad bar. It doesn’t serve sugary drinks and provides easy access to water. Hamilton Lodge school received its Healthy Choice award in May 2018.

Happy Maki

Serves fresh vegan sushi burritos. Fresh vegetables and natural spices are key ingredients of the fusion sushi wraps. Healthier drink options and free tap water are available. Happy Maki received its Healthy Choice award in December 2017.

Family owned business which sells leaner homemade sausages. Harry’s Kitchen registered its Healthy Choice commitments in October 2019.

Offers an ever-changing range of cuisines and flavours, including healthier choices. Jubilee Cafe received its Healthy Choice award in July 2016.

Japanese supermarket, which offers healthy homemade vegan sushi from its deli corner. Kantenya registered its Healthy Choice commitments in March 2017.

Kemp Thai

Switched to a healthier cooking oil and cooks some dishes using healthy methods. Kemp Thai registered its Healthy Choice commitments in December 2015.

Kouzina

A variety of traditional homemade and freshly prepared Greek food. It offers vegetarian and vegan options. Kouzina received its Healthy Choice award in February 2019.

The Larches Cafe

Offers homemade specials, sandwiches and breakfasts, lower sugar cakes. Has great value healthy snack options. The Larches Cafe received its Healthy Choice award in October 2015.

The Lecca Cafe

Introduced a healthier lunch meal deal for children. Promotes Sugar Smart principles. The owner committed to promoting healthy options. The Lecca Cafe registered its Healthy Choice commitments in August 2017.

Library Cafe, University of Sussex

Offers a range of coffee, salads and freshly made sandwiches. Offers healthier choices. Library Cafe received its Healthy Choice award in July 2016.
