Young people’s action on climate

The amazing mobilisation and enthusiasm we've seen during the many climate youth strikes in Brighton & Hove have shown that young people are a great force in pushing for change and coming up with creative ideas to combat climate change and the loss of biodiversity.

We need a youth citizen assembly to advise Brighton & Hove City Council on concrete actions to take on important issues like air pollution.

Brighton & Hove’s climate assembly

Did you know that we are having a climate assembly in Brighton & Hove this autumn? This virtual gathering of citizens from the city - 50 people chosen to represent the full, beautiful diversity of our communities - will take on the exciting challenge of coming up with ideas and actions to combat and lessen the impact of climate change. This will help to meet the council’s target of being carbon neutral by 2030.

We're really excited to announce that 16 to 18 year olds will be included in this assembly, as well as a youth speaker.

The primary focus of the climate assembly will be on transport. The council has pledged to use its recommendations to decide how to make transport work for everyone in the city, reduce carbon emissions and address the climate emergency.

Youth climate assembly

We have decided to set up a youth climate assembly for ages 13 to 19 (up to 25 with SEND (special educational needs and disability) and care leavers) to mirror the main assembly on transport.

It will be a great opportunity to critically and creatively reflect on the information given to us by experts in transport, urban planning and active travel among others to help us come up with local solutions for the future of Brighton & Hove.

We believe our citizens' assembly, set up by young people, could be the first in the UK. It is a unique opportunity for young people to be at the cutting edge of influencing the decisions being made locally about climate change.

A first introductory session is planned online using Zoom for 24 September at 5.30pm, for about an hour.
