Job introduction

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated full time (37hrs) AMHP Practice Manager to work within Brighton and Hove.

Interview date: TBC

For an informal discussion, please contact Judith Matthews on Tel: 0300 304 0075 by midday Friday 23 August.

About the role

This is a rare exciting opportunity for an experienced, innovative and inspirational manager for the AMHP service in the city of Brighton & Hove. You will lead on managing, developing and representing the service as part of a motivated, experienced and dedicated AMHP team.

The dedicated team of AMHPs provides the statutory functions of the AMHP over the 24 hour period with shift work to 22:00hrs each night and on call overnight. The team is joined by AMHPs from various community teams on day time shifts and provides the placements for AMHP trainees once a year. You will have line management responsibly for about 10 staff as well as ensuring AMHP focused supervision for those in community teams. You will need to have an eye for detail, and thorough understanding of, and ability to explain the Mental Health Act 1983 and a passion for excellent practice.

While most AMHPs are seconded from Brighton and Hove City Council to Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust you will be expected to maintain a local authority focus concerning statutory duties, including safeguarding, and promote a strong social perspective in the work. Many of the people with whom we work present with high levels of complexity requiring joint working and positive risk taking. The work can often be fast paced demanding flexibility, creative thinking and good working relationships with others.

As Manager of the AMHP service you will oversee the register, approval and re-approval of the AMHPS in accordance with the Mental Health regulations 2008. You will be required to report on AMHP activity and related issues to the local authority and other organisations/groups. You will investigate complaints and incidents on behalf of the local authority where these relate to the AMHP service.

You will represent the city’s AMHP service at a variety of forums within the city and within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. You will need to establish and maintain excellent partnership working with a variety of mental health teams and partner organisations.

Core working hours are 09:00-17:00 but you will be sufficiently flexible to participate in providing AMHP cover for the city including a regular weekly on call session overnight.

In addition to the basic salary the role attracts a dedicated AMHP enhancement of £2,550 p.a. which is annually reviewed, with enhancements for hours worked "out of hours". (20:00-06:00 hrs x1/3, Saturday and Sunday rates x1/2, Bank holidays x1). Working for Brighton & Hove City Council offers a good training package, attractive staff discounts and a local authority pension scheme.

Holding a UK driving licence is an advantage but not essential as cycling within the city and public transport is good.

Brighton and Hove is a vibrant and exciting place to live and work offering a lively city life, in a coastal setting, with the opportunity to get away from it all to the South Downs National park just on the doorstep.

You will:

    • Hold professional qualification and registration in accordance with Schedule 1 of the Mental Health (AMHP) (Approval) (England) Regulations 2008
    • Be a practicing Approved Mental Health Professional with experience of working out of hours.
    • Have experience of supervising staff and ideally management of a team.
    • Have an excellent working knowledge of all relevant legislation – Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005, including DOLS, Care Act 2014, principles of safeguarding adults and children.
    • Evidence of continued professional development.

Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.

Company information

Please note that this post is subject to a Basic Disclosure Criminal Records Check.
