Political Assistant to the Conservative Group

Fixed term for: Sept 2019 to May 2023

Interview date: Week of the 9th September 2019

About the role

Are you looking for a highly responsible role at the political centre of a unique Unitary Authority? The Conservative Group of Councillors on Brighton and Hove City Council is looking for a Political Assistant to support its work.

The role will involve:

  • liaising with stakeholders (including the media) to communicate the group’s political message with the outside world and generating positive press coverage
  • keeping abreast of political matters, demanding meticulous research of local issues and offering incisive comments on policy and strategy.
  • producing bulletins, briefings and organising meetings.

Working closely with members of the Conservative Group of Councillors and the wider Conservative Party, you will crucially have a comprehensive knowledge of, and interest in, politics at both strategic and grassroots levels. Your ideological affinity with the Conservative Party will win the confidence of those that you work for and your intellectual credibility will legitimise your contribution to policy making and political strategy.

You will have experience working for democratically elected politicians in a large and complex environment, with a demonstrable interest in local government matters. Tact and diplomacy will go hand-in-hand with your outstanding communication skills.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.

Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency's Points-based Immigration System.

From 6 April 2011 the Home Office has placed a permanent restriction on the number of migrant workers that all Tier 2 (General) Sponsors can recruit. Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.

Company information

We welcome applications from all sections of the community but particularly encourage applicants from a BME or White Other background as well as those who identify as disabled, LGB, male or trans as these groups are currently under-represented in our Directorate workforce.

As part of Brighton & Hove City Council's ongoing commitment to redeployment, please note that this vacancy may be withdrawn at any stage of the recruitment process, without prior notice if a suitable redeployee (internal employee at risk of redundancy) is identified.
