Job introduction

This is an exciting time to be a Planner in Brighton & Hove.  The service currently has a Assistant Planning Officer vacancy in the Development Management Team.

About the role

The Planning Service is on a significant improvement journey and central to this is our modernisation programme. Also there is much happening in the City with a wide range of strategic redevelopment sites coming forward. The city has a wealth of heritage assets (3400 Listed Buildings) and is tightly constrained by the sea to the south and South Downs National Park to the north making planning cases both interesting and challenging.

There are a wide and exciting range of opportunities for planners in the city. The city has a growth agenda, working with the Greater Brighton Economic Board and LEP to unlock development sites that offer an exciting context for planners in the city. The service is part of the larger City Development and Regeneration Team that is delivering key re-development sites in the city and directly delivering affordable housing. As planners we play an integral role in facilitating, shaping and delivering this regeneration.

The Service is progressing service improvements which started in 2016. Together we are creating a modern, positive and efficient Planning Service. We are delivering high quality and sustainable development alongside excellent customer service. We know that staff are the most important asset of the service and we are investing in development and training.

The city council adopted its City Plan Part 1 in March 2016 and work is now underway on the detailed plan (City Plan Part Two). Work is also underway on the Shoreham Harbour Joint Area Action Plan. There is a wide scope for involvement in policy and projects work including input into design and site briefs, conservation area character statements, internationally funded projects and strategic planning (West Sussex and Greater Brighton).
