Job introduction

Our full time apprenticeship programme will start in June 2020

We are now very interested to hear from graduates with some SEN & Disability experience with a desire to work in this field who are interested in an apprenticeship programme (over three terms) to enable them to attain qualified teacher status at Downs View.
 

School age roll:  171 in total of which 104 are at Downs View Woodingdean and have needs related to SLD/PMLD/ASC and 67 are at Downs View Hollingdean and have complex needs, SEMH & autism.

We are absolutely committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff to share this commitment.  This programme is subject to a successful enhanced DBS check. 

The apprentice will follow Post Graduate Teacher Apprenticeship standard.

About the role

Downs View is an Outstanding (Ofsted 2016) SEN Specialism (communication & interaction) school & college for pupils aged 4 to 19 years with the above needs.

We are a highly innovative, committed, outward looking and enthusiastic organisation in all aspects of our work but especially: highest quality education and care, inclusive practice, staff development and parental engagement.  We have previously, successfully supported graduates via the Graduate Teacher Programme & subsequently School Direct to attain qualified teacher status.  Currently we have 4 Teaching Apprenticeships nearing completion. All those people have become outstanding practitioners with our support, training and development opportunities.

Applicants must have:

  • The equivalent to a grade 4 in GCSE English and Mathematics and that all who intend to train to teach pupils aged 3-11 additionally have achieved a standard equivalent to a Grade 4 in the GCSE examination in a science subject
  • A degree awarded by a UK higher education provider, bachelor or a recognised equivalent qualification
  • Successfully completed the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy
  • Been assessed as suitable to teach by accredited Initial Teacher Training providers

Apprentices will work towards attaining qualified teacher status (QTS) by blending workplace-learning with part-time university study. They will need to meet the apprenticeship standard and will need to pass an end-point assessment
 

 

The Post Graduate Teacher apprentice will follow a structured training programme working within Downs View School and will learn to and demonstrate the following teaching standards:
  • Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
  • Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils
  • Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
  • Plan and teach well-structured lessons
  • Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
  • Make accurate and productive use of assessment
  • Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
  • Professional and Personal Behaviours required of a Teacher

Salary

Starting at UQ1 with SEN allowance. The School will pay for the tuition fees saving the applicant at least £9000.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
