Job introduction

Brighton and Hove is an exciting and fabulous city to work. The office base is well located near the seafront and in the centre of town. It is well connected by public transport. The council is a good employer and in addition to access to joining the public pension fund, offers flexible working, staff benefits and a people promise to support and develop our staff.

Fixed term until 31st March 2021 (while we consider the future structure of the Housing management service).

For an informal discussion, please contact Sylvia Peckham - Head of Housing Needs on 07795 335961

About the role

Do you want to make a difference to how we respond to homelessness?

One of our experienced Housing Options Managers is retiring and we need an energetic and innovative thinking person to work with a team of managers in our Housing Needs service.

The service is undergoing a transformation not just because of Covid, but to drive forward a culture change so that the service operates in a trauma informed approach with prevention of homelessness at its core. Where we are not able to prevent homelessness, then to ensure we quickly assess whether there are statutory housing duties and to move to find solutions, minimising the time in temporary accommodation.

The service manages a large portfolio of emergency and short term accommodation which we need to ensure we make best use of within the strategic aims of reducing the need for such accommodation as we increase prevention and move on. The service also incorporates assessment and management of the Housing register including advertising and shortlisting applications for properties.

This is an exciting time for the service and we receive National recognition for the challenges and innovative ways we are working.

We are recruiting to a fixed term position while we explore an alternative structure to support the service going forwards. The person we are looking for will be able to work as part of a team of managers and also on their own initiative. You will be flexible and able to be agile to respond to the needs of the service and supporting front line staff, while supporting senior managers.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.

Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Points-based Immigration System.

From 6 April 2011 the Home Office has placed a permanent restriction on the number of migrant workers that all Tier 2 (General) Sponsors can recruit. Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.

Company information

Please note that this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and is subject to a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Check.

We welcome applications from all sections of the community but particularly encourage applicants from a BME or White Other background as well as those who identify as male or trans as these groups are currently under-represented in our Directorate workforce.

As part of Brighton & Hove City Council's ongoing commitment to redeployment, please note that this vacancy may be withdrawn at any stage of the recruitment process, without prior notice if a suitable redeployee (internal employee at risk of redundancy) is identified.
