Celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride

The annual LGBTQ+ Brighton Pride Community Parade marched through the city on Saturday morning – a colourful celebration with a purpose. 

People from local organisations, charities, agencies and businesses joined in the spectacular event. There were about 1500 participants representing 147 different LGBTQ+ groups.

The parade took four hours to wind its way from Hove Lawns to Preston Park. Thousands of people turned out to line the route and show support for all those taking part. 

Generations of love

Amid the happy and joyous occasion, the right to equality and respect was also a key focus - clearly displayed on banners and many participants’ choice of outfits. 

The 2019 parade commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Inn uprising in New York. Stonewall was the moment that ignited the Pride movement. The theme “Generations of Love – Celebrating 50 years of campaigning with Pride” also recognised the ongoing campaigning work for equal rights.

Many participants, including the council’s LGBTQ+ Workers Forum, chose Stonewall as the inspiration for their sections of the parade.
