Parliament invites Brighton & Hove to give evidence on active travel

The House of Commons Transport Select Committee has invited Brighton & Hove City Council to give evidence to its inquiry on sustainable and active travel. The invitation follows a written submission made by the council’s transport team in October 2018, which outlined:

  • the success of active travel initiatives in the city
  • emphasised the importance of active travel in multi-modal infrastructure and information
  • made recommendations which would help ensure future investment and development

Sustainable and active travel 

A successful bid by the council in 2016 resulted in the Department for Transport awarding Brighton & Hove £1.485m for three years until April 2020 under the Access Fund for Sustainable Travel, to undertake sustainable and active travel projects. This followed previous successful bids for the Local Sustainable Transport Fund and the Sustainable Travel Transition Year.

Partnership work

The submission highlighted the projects that have been delivered since the awarding of the funding, including the work done with schools and employers, as well as partnership work with transport stakeholders.

Women in transport 

Principal Transport Planner, Laura Wells, who led on producing the written submission and who works in Transport Policy and Strategy, will attend the committee on 3 April 2019 to give evidence on behalf of the council. Three out of four members of the panel giving evidence in that session are female transport professionals from local authorities in England. The committee recently encouraged more women to take part in committee inquiries to improve representation.
